A free train ride for 30 squats

There are many things Russia and Russians are known for. Perhaps, things like space exploration, cold climate and vodka are the first ones to come to mind. Now there is one more thing...

As part of the 2014 Winter Olympic Games promo campaign, some Moscow subway stations are now equipped with machines that accept a short workout as payment. So instead of paying for a train ride, citizens have an option to do 30 squats and get a ticket for free.

Here is a translation of the text that appears throughout the promo video:

“How many people out there feel truly happy about their LIVES?

Are there many places out there that truly INSPIRE?

It always seems to us we constantly LACK something, be it respect, athletic enthusiasm, joys of an active lifestyle and so we need CHANGES”.

However unappealing the ad may look, perhaps, the idea of actually promoting the spirit of the Olympic Games and physical exercise is not a bad one and is quite innovative. What do you think? Would you do 30 squats for a free train ride? Share your comments below...

Yes I would do it because I am able to. My questions is - if everyone does this how do the trains continue to run?

So if you are fit and presumably working and getting paid you get to ride the train for free. My question how far one kilometer or one hundred kilometers? What if you are old and infirm and on a pension do you then have to pay? Does not seem to have been thought through properly.

Why not? I'd be improving my circulation and could bask in the glow that the exercise induces while taking my free train ride:) Maybe it would be so popular that I'd miss my train waiting for my turn! It's a great concept and we could have several options like static bikes etc. as many people start to have knee issues later in life that would preclude squats.

If I desperately do not want to use my cash for a train ticket I would do 30 squats for the free ticket

Kezza Most Australians dont fight for what is seen yo be wrong as to what the givernment does entirely forgetting we put them in power to run our country as we wish th ti.Once in power they have an almost communistic atitude and dont listrn to Australian citizens unless it suits them. Why should ghey....we dont speak up at some of the most offending laws they choose to bring oit.Example Julia Gillards laws on unfair fismissal taking us way back into the 60 s. I notice she has just sold her modest home in Adelaude and bought a million dollar plus home. Not bad on taxpayers money substituting her lifestule with a life long pension. Amazing to be rewarde forma  making a mess of our finances.Poloticians are totally out of touch.

This is a brilliant idea nto only do you get a free train ticket it is most likely the only excersise that some people would do. Bring it on NSW one machine at all train stations better still bring it on Australia we all need to shed some kilos.

I think that it's a great Idea. They are trying to get people motivated for the 2014 Winter Games campaign. It's a novel way to get people involved into a bit of good old fashioned FUN. From what I saw there was a couple of people who needed to do a few squats, and others just looked on and smiled and took photo's. There would be some people who would not be able to do 30 squats, like the Disabled or the elderly, or me even for that matter, but I'd give it a go, why not, would you?  Good on them.

Love this ad! Awesome work! Everyone is having a go! Young, old, big and small!   I come from a Russian family, and being Russian myself, I hear from my partner everyday, just how crazy us Russian people are...And this ad here is proof that YES! We are crazy, in a great way! Bring this into Australia! Would love to see how many people here are keen enough to give this a go! A little unsure how well this would go in Russia with all us Vodka drinkers out there...lol... Would be a funny outcome I say! AWESOME!

Great for people that can do it , but what about those with a disability , may only push their lack of self esteem lower ?

Hi  Alanna,   with respect  that is one of the things about the west,  we seem to focus on the negative.  The idea is brilliant,  I am sure we can think of something for people with a disability  ..  of course what can be done depends on the disability.  but think of loads of people with mild to mediaum disailites who can do this one and I am one of them.  But an inovative exercise for wheelchairs would be great.   And in Australia,  might also help reduce the fare evaders.   Think positive.  Step 1 never addresses all facets of anything :)

Great idea. Regular exercise should be promoted in any way possible - and getting a reward for it (a free train ticket) is a bonus. They could maybe incorporate this idea with the Danish one of using gym equipment to generate electricity (i.e. instead of squats people could go for a 2-minute bicycle or rowing session to supply train station with the energy for lighting).

Is not that a great idea? This scheme rewards people for the demonstration of physical health. It is a complete movement that exercises many muscles simultaneously. Requires strength, agility, flexibility and cardiovascular capacity. Finally - burns calories! Admiration for the Russians.
