New Asylum Seekers Plan

United Nations Organisation has pointed out that the PNG solution proposed by Labor party to deal with asylum seekers and people smugglers may in fact breach Australia's commitment to resettle asylum seekers under the international law. What is your opinion on Kevin Rudd's plan to transfer and resettle asylum seekers to Papua New Guinea? Do you think it may be a broader human dilemma beyond politics? I think that all asylum seekers should be transported back to their own countries why should they be allowed to come into our country when everyone else has to do it legally. They also need to minimise the amount let in as Australia will end up in financial trouble like other countries.

I think the real debate here should be what we are calling them firstly they are not asylum seekers, they pay people to get them to Australia as illegals if they can afford the money that they pay the smugglers why not come throught the right way, like many comments that I have read here so far I to have relatives in England who would love to settle here in Australia and contribute to our way of life, but they have been told that they are too old, if you are going to rely of Tony or Kevin to solve the problem your going to be waiting for a long, long time.

PNG is to close to Australia. Asylum seekers will find it easy to enter Australia by island hopping. PNG no doubt has its own problems without setting up ghettos of foreigners. One solution is to allow the boats to enter Australian waters then take the people off, sink the boat, treat the captain and crew as invaders and throw them into a prisoner of war camp with a massive fine for their release. Boat people should get no further than Christmas Island where they should be processed and sent to countries that will accept them. If Christmas Island sinks under the weight of boat people then perhaps the message will get through not to come in the first place. Turn Christmas Island into a manufacturing place where the cheap labor could be used by Holden and Ford to build cars without huge government subsides. Train the boat people to work in off shore call centers like Telsta based on Christmas Island. For that matter train them to work answering calls to government departments instead of being placed on hold for twenty minutes or more. In short make the boat people earn their keep on the island. PNG settlement is no solution. It is merely shifting the problem for one place to another. Let's make a start by sinking every boat that enters Australian waters illegally.

A shot across the bow will do way more in dissuading those illegal boats and their passengers & crews from trying. Anything else might help a little... maybe... or, more likely, not. But illegal boats should be turned back, that's all.

I am a Milne Bay Kid from Papua New Guinea. Living in Central Coast Australia with my family. I still hold my PNG Passport after almost twenty years. Life in Australia is great! But Home is where the Heart is! I think the Prime Minister Mr Kevin Rudd, needs to Man Up! Make a stand and take up the roll as a leader of a wonderful Nation of Australia to deal with the issues in Australia NOT in PNG. Most land in PNG are owned by tribal clans, its not Government owned. I see no future solution to this.... Grace Hull www.vpnghelpgroup.org.au

I agree with what Kevin Rudd is doing as it is the only way to prevent these people smugglers getting rich off the possible deaths of desperate people. I feel those people who are bad-mouthing PNG are too rude for words. They denigrate a country with is undergoing a progressing economy & social state & are happy to accept genuine qualified people to their country to help them grow. It is also a pretty place that is quite similar to Nth Qld. in climate etc. If these people are genuine then they should welcome the chance to participate in being part of a emerging country. Too many people (who don't have access to a lot of money) have had their names down on waiting lists for years. Some people who are genuine refugees have been lingering in camps like the Burmese in Malaysia for years waiting to come here & they are in terrible conditions unlike the facilities we give them. I want a system that is fair to all & does not risk the lives of others or make con artists rich. This is The Lucky Country & I want to see it kept that way & not exploited by people smugglers or queue jumpers, or denigrated by self-serving politicians.

I would like to offer an idea that I believe would solve this problem over night. I believe all illegal boat arrivals should be shipped directly to a UNHCR Refugee camp designated by UNHCR, We then take two refugees for each one we deposit, chosen by the UNHCR staff at said camp, to settle in Australia. This would achieve two things. One, we fulfil our treaty obligations that we have signed up to, and two, We make it clear to people smugglers and their clients that they can not buy their way into Australia. We should bear in mind that some of the refugees in UNHCR camps have been there for twenty plus years, and it is they who we should be helping.

Kevin Rudd has really only passed the problem to PNG at the Australian tax payers expense. Another plan that hasn't been thought through. I feel for the people of PNG. Its not as if they hav'nt already got enough to deal with. This will only add to their heartache. The Labor government caused this problem with the boats. Now their making out their fixing it. PNG couldn't say no to this deal. $$$ Blank cheque!. Money speaks a lot of languages.

I think that the intention of this policy is to stop people from getting on the boats with the threat of having to stay in PNG. If it works than people will be less likely to risk their lives on the death traps that the people smugglers put them on. I also believe that that the Indonesian politicians that complained about not being notified about the change in policy are worried about a loss of kickbacks from the people smugglers.

It is a great idea. If they are so desperate, I do agree that where they come from is pretty awful, they should capply to come in the legal manner. All they are doing is is disadvantaging their own citizens who apply legally. Isn't this what they are claiming they are fleeing from, discrimination. It seems to me it is only those with money who are able to afford the boats. Just like life ever where the rich claim extra privileges.

As far as how I feel about the people themselves I don't feel it is right, but I understand why he does it. Australia's population is increasing dramatically with people settling LEAGALLY as it is. We won't be able to support all the Asylum Seekers coming in. If they may not even get to Australia it discourages them and therefore, makes us able to support our population for longer, but the growing population crisis is another topic.

No I do not think it is a great idea, just passing the problem onto someone else!!! PNG cannot afford it and having trouble of their own. Australian Government needs to toughen up and sent the illegals back where they orginated from. As soon as they land on Christmas Island unless they have their documentation, birth cert. etc put on the first plane back to their home. As soon as they get free in PNG it is only a little boat trip over to Aust them. PNG people have been coming across back & fro for years. PNG will only be able to take so many, which us the taxpayers will have to pay for, the people smugglers will then flood the gates after that we will be back to the start!! Not rocket science. Simply knowing basic maths!

Very difficult problem to deal with. I think this idea may work ok especially as there are ads posted widely in the countries these people are coming from advising them that they will not be admitted to Australia, especially if they come on boats, but their chances are better if they apply thru the proper channels. Some people feel this is harsh treatment, but it is no worse than the refugee camps which many have escaped from. But if this works for a number of years and slows or stops the boats the policy can always be changed again. Those who say Indonesia should sign up to UN and do their bit obviously have not travelled to Indonesia. There is a great deal of wealth there but much more poverty. As to the comment that they all have the latest mobile phones, you can buy all the latest electronic stuff far cheaper than in Australia, and a mobile phone is the cheapest, most reliable form of contact as private house phones are not common or reliable in most areas apart from big cities like Jakarta,Yogja etc. At least Kev is doing SOMETHING, how successful only time will tell! Tony A...would whinge regardless and he still has not outlayed exactly how he intends to solve the problem....perhaps greeting them in his budgies would scare the crap out of them!

I'm all for legal immigration for people who have skills Australia needs. Why should Australians have to foot the bill for another country's problem? Asylum seekers who come illegally by boats should not be given preference over those who immigrate properly and the Australian immigration officers should be resourced well enough to allow speedy processing of those with papers and send those without and have destroyed their identification back to their country of origin. It is because of the excessive amount of time it takes to be processed that people get desperate and jump on boats.

The main problem with me IS the people making all the money from these people, risking all there lives for money. We came to Australia from England under very strict rules. We where not bringing sickness into the country,we also had to work very hard to buy a home for our family.I think these people are given to much help, they will never work for this great country . There needs to be much sticker rules, before this country becomes a 3rd world country also. PNG is not the right solution as these people appear to want the best which they are not paying for. What conditions have they come from? This is costing the Australian tax payer wherever they are. If they would assimilate into our culture it may make Aussies more tolerant but a lot of them will not. Rudd has moved on to another muck up and probably thinks he has solved this problem by paying another country big bucks to look after his problems. He thinks it is a vote winner

Well I think that it's a great idea. We have to stop them from coming here to settle in our beautiful country. There are to many people telling Australia what to do, it's our country and the United Nations should just butt out, simple as that, butt out. It would make a welcome change. There are many people who come here the right way, legally and we have no trouble at all. I have never heard of any Aussies jumping on a boat and landing on foreign shores and getting away with it, I don't think so. It's a marvelous idea, and one that we should support. Cheers Mishiee.

PNG is just a little boat trip over! The PNG people often go back & fro! Our Government needs to fix the problem properly. The people smugglers aren't stupid (sorry to say some of us are) all they have to do is send enough illegals over to fill up PNG that they cannot take anymore then then they will then be brought here to Australia. Simple maths. Also about time the PNG looked after it's own starving people! Australia needs to stop giving Indonesia alll the millions of dollars until they too are willing to help stop the boat smugglers/illegals

It is such a tough situation with many areas that need to be addressed. It's interesting that the UN says we may be in breach of our agreement regarding refugees. We have accepted so many refugees already who unfortunately have to live in detention centres while they are being processed so we have still technically accepted them and therefore aren't in breach. There are so many of them however that the govt is trying to find a solution so they've asked for help from PNG. Housing refugees in PNG is no different to housing them here-it's all going to cost Australia.. And yes detention centres are not nice places for these poor people to be but where else would you put them? In shanty towns like in Sourh Africa? In camps where there is little or no medical help, sanitation or disease prevention which happens when people flee from conflict? At least Australia is trying to do the right thing in a humane way. Shouldn't Indonesia be doing more since these poor people are coming from there? That's where i think the UN should be focussing their attention. Saying send them back is not a solution. They will keep coming. We clearly have no concept of their desperation. But I do think we need to keep coming up with new solutions because we also can't just let them all in to become instant Australians because then the whole system breaks down and it is unfair to all those seeking asylum or citizenship legally. It is a very sad situation.

Indonesia is the big problem since they refuse to sign or have any part of the refugee convention.....as such refugees who land there have no legal rights....they are unable to apply for asylum, they are not allowed to work and they are not allowed to send their kids to school. In most cases they have to keep paying bribes to officials to keep from being locked up. This is why they flee to Aus. It is a very sad thing that as muslims themselves the Indonesian government will not help out their own brothers and sisters who are seeking asylum. In many cases they lock them up in jails which are worse than the refugee camps they came from. It is a very sad conundrum. Indonesia needs to get on board and do their bit just like everyone else.

All involved should immediately be sent back from whence they came.No excuses, no exemptions. Even in New guinea, they should be supplied with the bare necessities only. No luxuries at all. To the best of my recollection John Howard excised Chritmas Island from Australian imigration law."boat people" who are intercepted and sent there are treated according to different rules. That doesn't explain to me what happens to all the other illegal imigrants that arrive by other means on mainland Australia. Are they going to be sent to PNG also. (probably not) Not all illegal immigrants to Australia risk their lives on rickety little boats. They can arrive with legal documents as a tourist and overstay, or false documents, or other ways that don't involve arriving at a major air or sea port. I'd like to know more about the numbers of illegal immigrants that come to Australia by other means, and how we deal with them once they are under the rules that exist on mailand Australia. Will they be deported to PNG too? There is more than one way into Australia but our politicians and the press would have us believe that rickety little boats out of Indonesia that get diverted to Christmas island are the only method of illegal entry. Illegal imigrants will keep coming by whatever means available. After the next election I expect to see a new, new solution and still they will come. I have heard nothing said about what the PNG solution will cost Australians, or what PNG expects, but I will bet it's going to be a very expensive for Australians. I've seen some comments about NZ having an illegal imigrant problem too. I suppose they all come on rickety little boats out of Indonesia also.

I think we need to make the distinction between illegal immigrants and asylum seekers...they are not one and the same thing regardless of how they arrive. The 60,000 illegal immigrants in this country are simply people who have come here on a valid visa and have simply taken the law into their own hands by deciding to stay on and not return...and incidently many of these are from the US and UK. The fact that asylum seekers make an application to stay gives them legal ground while their applications are pending. They do not run or hide unlike the true illegal immigrants who go undercover. These are the ones that are never mentioned and certainly the ones we should be worried about.

Those 60000 illegal immigrants you talking about have often paid taxes and are more of a help to our economy, contributed to Australia somehow. Why carn't they be given an Australian Citizenshipfirst? * Then these illegal boat people that sponge of us taxpayers majority of their a lifetimes. They don't have proper ID to start with. And should not get first prefence to be in Australia. * I know of one man from one of the countries South American came here to escape the Mafia, yet Government didn't want to know him. Yet he was willing to work three jobs, put himself through English Classes not supported by the Taxpayers any way. Got a job out west on a cotton farm, nearly went to the High Court to keep him here. When he first came he was in Sydney where ever the refugee settlement there is. They were given free food. The boat illegals came whenever they wanted got armfuls of frozen foods, just a continous stream. We are paying for that. They never paid for a cent. This young man was disgusted by how much these people abuse the Australian taxpayers - not grateful for anything just give me more, give me more and for free. * This is what stinks people want to come to Australia like this man in need and willing to pay for his way yet not allowed too. Sux Big Time. I also know of Afican Refugees trying to do the same and not wanting to accept Gov. handouts. * Really worried about? Sorry, the only ones I worry about is the Muslims coming over in thousands populating Australia then the next step will be Sharia Law. Maybe that is what you want for your children, grandchildren, great grandchildren to live under. Sharia Law. Scarier still is Rudd/Labor has one on their own team now!

I am all for discouraging boats as I do not want to see people needlessly drown....BUT there has to be another way. Australia has as many global obligations as it does local ones and as members of the UN and signatories of the refugee convention it is our legal responsibility to accept asylum seekers should they land on our shores. I cannot stress this point enough BUT asylum boat people ARE NOT illegal immigrants. They have every legal right to seek asylum in the way that they do and it is our legal responsibility to accept them and assess their cases. If we find any who do not have genuine cases then fine send them back....BUT bear in mind that 90% of boat people are found to be genuine and it is no surprise considering the risk they take to come here and the fact that they sell everything they own...they come here poor and with nothing. It is a myth that they have money. All I know for sure is that I cannot judge them because as parent I know I would do exactly the same thing in any way I can.

I am getting very tired of the UN telling us what we should do with the resettling of people who have come to our country ILLEGALLY. If they went through the proper and right channels well that would be a different matter but these people are coming here illegally and the UN doesn't want us to do anything about it, that is not right either for those who have come here legally or those who were born here. Its a great idea and should be done ASAP.

I think it is a great idea, it will get the message across that they DO NOT settle in Australia illegally. As for human rights, well at least they aren't sent back to sea on their boats

i think it is a good idea dont let them in australia to settle as we have relatives in uk who have to go through the right process to come here and live so why should they be allowed to skip all the right ways and sneak in and take all the aussie jobs and housing....regards karen....

Kazrus your relatives live in the UK so they're not being persecuted and have a good standard of living, whereas the 'boat people' are fleeing persecution and living standards that are largely beyond our comprehension. These people are so desperate they're prepared to put their children on fragile boats and take them across the sea to secure refuge. Would your relatives be prepared to risk their lives to come to Australia?

I think it is a bad decision because there has been no consideration taken for Papua New Guinea's major health problems they already have. A huge shortage of doctors and nursing staff. Not enough hospital facilities. This to me me is going to create more problems as it stands. The governments don't have a bloody clue how to handle this.People coming from the UK don't have the sufferings these asylum people have in their country and pretty much know why these people are seeking asylum.
