Explaining PayPal

Can someone please explain how PayPal works? I have heard several versions, and I am not convinced that I completely understand. And how does one go about opening an account? I am very backward when it comes to these things - give me cash any time. But I would like to be able to say "I am keeping up with My Grand Kids at Least" Thanks heaps

could some-one please tell me..... do you HAVE to have a credit card. I joined PayPal many years ago to get payments from surveys (only way to get paid) I have never used it (not much going in now) If it acts like a bank, do they give interest, do they charge account keeping fees? How would you check account when cannot remember password etc. Does all communication ahve to be online .. is there a 'phone number? I prefer to talk to people. 7/April, 2013

Very easy and safe to use, but use your common sense all the same.

It works by acting as a "third party" for any purchases or sales that you make over the internet. Buy using paypal, this gives you security when dealing with people on the net that you may not know and acts as "insurance" helping to ensure that you get the goods that you pay for and vice versa. You do need to register a credit card - which pay pal will authorise before you account is activated (they place a small sum in your account) which you need to then type in to verify your card to your account and then you are ready to go!.. help that helps a bit!!

Very easily and just as easy to make a bill. Just know your stuff, who your dealing with, what your dealing with and what for? i got hit by a con artist and i got stuck with the bill. They investigated it but thats all they do they don't tell you anything else. They give a chance to explain but after that they don't tell you the verdict. HOPE THIS HELPS>>> KNOW YOUR STUFF.....

After you have set up your paypal account and have made a payment, just make sure that they are the people that you have paid. There are scammers out there who send through emails stating a variety of things, so check the emails carefully and never access through the email to paypal,GO to their website! You can forward suspicious emails to a spoof address that they have on the paypal website. By being careful you will enjoy paypal, I have been using them for years and have had no problems.

Along with everyone else, it's super easy to use and set up, follow the prompts and you cant go wrong. Quick example about the Card Linking I found out recently doing a purchase on ebay was that I wanted to purchase an item costing $12.00 but only had $10.00 in my paypal account, thus what happened was the remaining $2.00 go debited straight out of my savings account allowing me to cleanly pay for the transaction. Also another bonus with Paypal is that if for some reason you don't recieve the item you ordered you can place a dispute claim in and your monies are held in limbo until the problem can be resolved. Other companies might say "we've sent it and if you haven't rec'd it then bad luck" money lost and no item. Very safe to use in this day and age.. Would love to know how you get on.

It's an excellent way of handling money matters on line. I personally do not like to give my personal's out. Ha, that sounds like my washing, sorry. However I was stung some time back and I had to learn the hard way and I must say it was a hard lesson to learn. Most of all be careful and keep an eye on things and you will have no problems at all, and good luck.

All my experiences with paypal have been excellent. I find it very easy to use. You can either deposit money into your paypal account or just have it connected to your bank card. I simply have it connected to my bank card. I have never had an issue with it and have also never had any fees. I have used it to purchase various things, that are not just from ebay. I would highly recomend using it. :)

Easy to open, do have your details such as account info, cc number etc on hand, they will require that info. Just skimming through other replies and felt I should mention their fees. PayPal don't provide their service for free and from personal experience I do admire some Ebay sellers for even using the service. In my experience, as a seller... they slug you fees twice. The first when the payment is made, then when you arrange transfer to your bank account, they slug you more fees. They are a little deceptive in advertising their service as instant also. The transfer to a bank account takes around 3-5 working days. Just another perspective.

I use Paypal whenever I purchase items on ebay. I have also used Paypal to purchase goods from Australian suppliers away from ebay. However, my experience with fees is that they only charge when you are a seller and someone deposits money into your account. When transferring money from Paypal to your account they do not charge a fee, however they did do so several years ago. Overall, I have to say I have been very happy wth my Paypal membership.

Agree with all you've said here Brinjen...however last time I transferred money from PayPal to my bank account I wasn't charged anything? I wonder if it is only sums over a certain amount that is charged a fee when transferring or if PayPal have dropped the fee altogether?

Hope you managed to open an account, just remember when they tell you have some money deposited in your Paypal account (from someone else) that you need to log into your paypal account on their web page to withdraw the funds into your bank account. I am 68 amd have been using it for about 4 years and find it is an excellent safe way of doing things.

It is very simple dunbaylass, All you need to open their website and click to register. After that you need your credit card number to be registered with Paypal so that you can carry out transaction when you buy stuff from Amazon, Ebay and many more. Moreover you can send and receive money into your registered card when transactions carried from Paypal. Hope you understood.

Paypal is dead easy - firstly set up an account, it is totally free for no commercial users. All you need is a valid email address and a password. Then you enter you details (as much info as you want). After you do this you can then link your bank account details and/or credit card details if you prefer to this account. It is 100% free and 99.99999etc% safe (they have inbuilt security messures and protection). Then you can have deposits put straight into it and then transfer it to your bank account or you can buy things directly off the web using the funds in the account (if you don't have enough in the account it will ask you if you want to transfer funds in or use a linked credit card). This way you never have to give your credit details directly to an unknown website or you can buy things off the net without even having a credit card.

Hi There, PayPal is the safest tool to use online. I am sure you could use a debit card, like a credit card from the post office as it is like a credit card only you have your own money on it. Hope this helps :)

Paypal is a great way to pay safely online. It takes a little bit to set up but once you're done, it definitely makes buying online safer and easier. It is my preferred method of payment. Hubby and I buy quite a lot of things online, as we find things we need far cheaper, than we can buy them in the shops. Twice we bought things on Ebay, only to have them not turn up but because we paid with paypal; Paypal refunded our money. No hassles. You can link your paypal account to your bank account and or credit card/debit card. So if you don't have enough money in your paypal account, paypal can withdraw money to cover your purchases from your bank account or cards...not without your permission....paypal always asks you at check out if you want to use them if you don't have enough funds in your paypal account. From memory, when we set up our paypal accounts - paypal put money into your bank account - this is usually a small amount eg. .06 cents and they ask you to tell them the amount to verify that it is your bank account (as a security measure), they have a spot in your paypal account where you enter this amount, when you receive the payment. I highly recommend paypal for all your shopping needs. Take the time to join and open a paypal account, as you won't be sorry.

PayPal is a method of making online payment without divulging your credit card or banking details. They are a go-between that hides those details. You can purchase items and you can send money to people by using their email address. You can also receive money that same way. You have to open an account to withdraw the funds. Funds can be withdrawn in a few different ways. There are fees connected to some transactions, so be sure to read that information. You link a credit card to your account or provide your bank details to make purchases and that amount is deducted from your account or you can keep money that has been paid to your PayPal account available for future purchases. Basically it adds an extra layer of security between your details and the person you are paying.

I always use paypal, You give them your credit card or bank details, so when you buy over internet you pay via paypal so buyer does not get your bank details. Then paypal get it from your account. Very simple. Its a lot safer doing it that way. You can also have money put into your paypal account. and it gets taken off that. You are also protected , if you don't receive article they will refund you the money.

Cyber Zombies answer is spot on however Cyber fails to add that you can link your bank account to Pay Pal and they make withdrawals from your bank account to pay for online purchases. That way you have no need to give your credit card or bank details to anyone but paypal & your bank details are perfectly safe but don't get caught with ongoing charges as some sites charge a monthly fee. Always check back with paypal that you are not logged into a contract for monthly fees, you can cancel these before they are due.

it works like a bank in the way that redemptions from survey providers can be deposited into your paypal account, where you can then either use the funds to buy online goods that accept payments through paypal or if an account has been registered you can request to withdraw the monies to that accoun. and still pay for goods online. say an online store says "yes we accept paypal" well then you would follow their payment methods, so long as the ammount was in the account it goes through like a bank payment. or so i have found as for opening an account, you will need to vist the pay pal web site say www.paypal.com.au then click on register, follow the promps and so on

I've only just joined up with Pay Pal in the last 3 months and they are much safer than using your credit/debit card. I now won't buy anything unless I can use Pay Pal.

paypal is great ! I have been using it for a while now and it was real easy and quick to set up.... my only issue is when I think I have enough funds in there and I don't because certain people, companies take to long to deposit!! so then it comes out of my credit card & I end up paying interest on a on-line item that wasn't meant to cost me much !!!!! however that is not paypal's fault
